Inspired by the original ice bars and ice hotels in Scandinavia, the cruise industry's first true ice bar is the ultimate chill. This frozen chamber is set in changing hues of blue, green and purple LED lighting that simulates the Northern Lights and creates a distinctive arctic atmosphere. The SVEDKA Ice Bar features a bar, walls, tables, stools, glasses and life-size sculptures all made from ice. Guests are given hooded coats and gloves to keep them warm, since the room's temperature does not rise above 17 degrees Fahrenheit.

Oceania Cruises Ups the Culinary Ante in Alaska

oceania_cruises.jpg

PACIFIC NORTHWEST CUISINE SHOWCASED ON OCEANIA CRUISES IN ALASKA: Regional Seafood, Game, Poultry and Berries Highlight Menus

MIAMI, June 23, 2010 - Fresh ingredients, simply prepared, with influences from Asian and Native American traditions are characteristics of Pacific Northwest cuisine. Oceania Cruises will up the epicurean ante in Alaska, from May through August 2011, when guests on m/s Regatta will be treated to succulent selections that showcase regional delicacies.

"Oceania Cruises is virtually synonymous not only with fine cuisine, but culinary diversity," stated Bob Binder, the line's president. "Our culinary team is eager to showcase Alaska's renowned regional favorites and the region's freshly caught seafood as it adds an entirely new dimension to the dining experience."

Highlights of Oceania Cruises' maiden Alaska season include two full days of glacier cruising and a mix of marquee and off-the-beaten-path Inland Passage ports, the latter a hallmark of the brand. With two-for-one rates and free airfare, 10-day voyages start at $3,499 per guest, based on double occupancy.

oceania_alaska_cruises.jpg

Pacific Northwest cuisine will be featured during lunch in the casual Terrace Cafe which offers both indoor and al fresco seating and in the ship's gourmet Grand Dining Room as well. In the evenings, regional specialties will be showcased in all four of the ship's gourmet, open-seating restaurants; all of which are available with no surcharge.

Great Cuisine in the Great Land
When provisioning locally, the ship's executive chef seeks the freshest catch and shellfish, making on-the-spot decisions. Consequently, not all selections will always be available and there may be surprise menu additions. Depending on the voyage and venue, appetizers might include Fresh Halibut Veloute - a creamy fish soup with saffron rice and julienne leeks - or Alaskan King Crab Legs, sure to be a guest favorite. Entrees may include: Fresh Local Halibut with dill and tomato beurre blanc Grilled Alaskan Venison Medallions and wild mushroom fricassee Alaskan King Crab Rissotto Poached Local Wild Salmon Filet with chive butter sauce Grilled Halibut with orange and red onion chutney Hazelnut-breaded Chicken Breast with cranberry-orange relish Pan-fried Local Ling Cod Filet a la Duglere Thai-spice Encrusted Alaskan Halibut Filet Wild Alaskan Salmon with apple cider beurre blanc

Although berries grow abundantly in the vast wilderness areas of the 49th state, they are a limited resource because Alaska's black and brown bears eat them all summer long. Guests onboard Regatta may nevertheless get the chance to taste the favored fruit when the pastry chef creates Alaskan Blueberry Coffee Cake or Springtime Alaskan Berry Pie.

CELEBRITY CRUISES DESIGNS MORE WAYS FOR GUESTS TO ENJOY EUROPE

celebrity_cruises.jpg

From award-winning ships to world-class cuisine, from extraordinary service to inspiring activities, the "Designed for you" brand platform exemplifies the way Celebrity Cruises creates experiences based on what discerning cruisers want most. Now, as a result of research into what would enhance its guests' Europe experience, Celebrity has expanded its already dynamic shore excursion line-up by designing several new ways for guests to explore the region. An expanded private tour offering allows guests to explore Europe's fascinating ports in a way geared toward their individual interests, and enhancements to the line's "easy" shore excursions aim to expand the number of in-port tour options available to guests with mobility issues. Also new this summer, for guests visiting Venice, Italy while sailing on Celebrity Century, Celebrity Equinox, and the brand-new Celebrity Eclipse, is a twist on "voluntourism": anyone purchasing a shuttle bus pass from Celebrity in Venice can enjoy a free ticket to 16 of Venice's most revered and historically relevant churches. This offering is unique to Celebrity and sister line Royal Caribbean International.

Celebrity's new private tour arrangements program gives cruisers a way to see many of Europe's most compelling ports the way they personally would like to do so and at their own pace, from the exclusive comfort of a private car or van. While its group excursions remain extremely popular, particularly for giving cruisers a comprehensive taste of a region's highlights, Celebrity?s private arrangements are designed for the discerning cruiser who prefers a more exclusive and customized in-port experience that takes them more deeply into a region, with the added bonus of a more flexible timetable.

celebrity_cruises.jpg

In St. Petersburg, Russia, in addition to its regular shore excursion program, Celebrity has long offered private arrangements, given the country's visa requirements, which allow guests on a cruise-line sponsored excursion or private arrangement an exemption from obtaining a tourist visa. In addition to the 30 private arrangements offered in St. Petersburg, Celebrity also is offering private arrangements in Rome (Civitavecchia), Florence (Livorno), Cagliari (Sardinia), and Naples, Italy; Athens (Piraeus) and
Corfu, Greece; Ashdod and Haifa, Israel; Istanbul, and Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey; Alexandria, Egypt; Stockholm, Sweden; and Helsinki, Finland.

The program accommodates anywhere from one to eight guests traveling together; groups of more than eight can make arrangements through Celebrity's groups shore excursion program. Like Celebrity's other shore excursions - as well as beverage packages and specialty dining arrangements - the private arrangements are available for pre-cruise booking via the line's website, www.celebritycruises.com. When pre-booking online, one guest in the party reserves the vehicle for a single price that covers one to three guests in a car or four to eight guests in a van. Guests whose native tongues differ from English may request a guide who speaks other languages, such as German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish, among others.

Guests can request that an existing tour be offered as a private arrangement, or design a custom arrangement featuring his or her own in-port experience. To pre-book a custom arrangement, guests can visit www.celebritycruises.com to complete a custom arrangement form. After submitting the form, the guests will be contacted to create their specific agenda for the day in conjunction with their tour guide and/or driver.

celebrity_cruises.jpg

Celebrity has also designed expanded shore excursion offerings in Europe, to make it simple for cruisers who face mobility challenges to enjoy the region. In its 2010 summer Europe season, Celebrity will offer at least 35 "easy" shore excursions - 15 of them brand-new - catering to guests who have walking difficulties and are not able to handle steps or extended periods of walking or standing, or for guests who are full-time wheelchair users. One of these new tours, offered in Dubrovnik, Croatia, is "Easy Seaside Resort of Cavtat and Dubrovnik." During this tour, guests will visit the quaint seaside town of Cavtat and explore the fascinating walled city of Dubrovnik. In Helsinki, Finland, "Easy Helsinki" offers guests the opportunity to experience the Finnish capital's highlights, including Embassy Park, Mannerheim Street and the Olympic Stadium.

Because Celebrity's "easy" shore excursions utilize special equipment such as access ramps and lifts on vehicles and space is limited, guests are encouraged to book Celebrity's "easy" shore excursions by contacting shorexaccess@rccl.com in advance of their cruise.

Also new this summer, for guests visiting Venice, Italy while sailing on Celebrity Century, Celebrity Equinox, and the brand-new Celebrity Eclipse, is a twist on "voluntourism." Anyone purchasing a shuttle bus pass from Celebrity in Venice can enjoy a free ticket to 16 of Venice's most revered and historically relevant churches. Celebrity Cruises and sister line Royal Caribbean International are the only two cruise lines to have partnered with Venice church preservation group "The Chorus Association" to offer this benefit during cruises that visit the historic city. The Chorus Association will invest the $13-per-person ticket value in the restoration and maintenance of the priceless churches and the cultural heritage represented in the more than 1,000 pieces of art that reside in the churches.

The Chorus Association's aim is to contribute to the safeguarding, conservation and restoration of the architectural and artistic heritage of churches in Venice.

Canada & New England Cruises

canada_new_england_cruise.jpg

If you're an avid cruiser like I am you are constantly looking for deals and new places to visit. This is the year to cruise Canada & New England and I'll tell you why . . . In 2010, there will be a record number of ships cruising Canada & New England, TWENTY ONE. That means lots of itineraries to choose from + lots of stateroom availability = lots of good deals!

Below I've included an outline on the destination from C.L.I.A.

'Whether it's a stop at historic Saint John's, Canada's oldest incorporated city; a visit to famed Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts; a call at Baltimore's bustling harbor; or a day baking in the hospitality of beautiful Charleston, South Carolina - a rich variety of wonderful experiences await "close-to-home" vacationers on a cruise along the eastern coast of the U.S. and Canada.

Cruises ranging from 2-night getaways to 12-night voyages sail the coastal waters of North America and into Canada along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Choices in embarkation ports that include Montreal, New York, Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia, Norfolk (Virginia), Charleston (South Carolina) and other cities have helped to make these itineraries a popular choice for drive-and-sail cruises and as part of a land and sea vacation.

The ships sailing east coast cruises rival the ports of call for diversity. Cruise vacationers can choose to take their Canada/New England/U.S. Coastal cruise on ships ranging from intimate vessels carrying fewer than 50 passengers to spectacular resorts at sea.

Typically the Canada/New England cruise season runs from May through October, with fall foliage highlighting the later sailings, and more southern coastal sailings run through the winter. Value hunters will find the best deals on early spring departures.

Ports of Call

Newport
Charming mom-and-pop shops and restaurants line the streets just steps from the cruise pier of this waterfront town located on Narragansett Bay. A beach community where icons such as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and William K. Vanderbilt once lived, Newport is rich in history and famous for its ocean view mansions.

Mansion Tours
The great mansions of Newport can be explored during a cliff walk, a stroll around town, or via bus tour down Bellevue Avenue. Some of the stops along the way may include The Breakers, Marble House, The Elms, and Rosecliff.

History and Scenery
Visitors can enjoy Newport's history and scenic beauty on a walking tour around the city or a motor coach excursion down the 10-mile long Ocean Drive. Sights to see and break at along the way include Federal, Colonial and Victorian homes, the Gothic Church of St. Mary's (where JFK and Jacqueline married), Redwood Library, Tourno Synagogue, Newport Art Museum, the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and Salve Regina University.

Shopping Options
Along with parks and million-dollar yachts, visitors can find art galleries, souvenir shops, boutiques, restaurants, name-brand clothing stores and outdoor kiosks along Newport's wharf area and Thames Street.

new_england_canada_cruise.jpg

Boston
One of the nation's oldest and most historic cities, Boston also ranks among the premier attractions on Canada/New England cruise itineraries. Fascinating historical sites and cultural landmarks, a wealth of top museums and trendy shopping and entertainment areas make Boston a great place to visit for anyone.

Freedom Trail
A walking tour of Boston can take visitors back to the revolutionary roots of America. Points of interest and story telling on this guided tour include the Massachusetts State House, Park Street Church, Granary Burying Ground, the Old Corner Book Store, America's first public school, and Faneuil Hall.

Lexington, Concord and Harvard Yard
A scenic drive to the outskirts of Boston will take visitors to the battlefields of Lexington and Concord, where Minutemen battled the British army and Paul Revere made his legendary midnight ride. Other highlights include Walden Pond, where Thoreau wrote his masterpiece, and Harvard University.

Marblehead and Salem
These two famous coastal communities provide a link to Boston's maritime and Puritan legacies. Visitors to Marblehead will discover its rich nautical heritage, cobblestone streets, Federal and Georgian homes and 19th century mansions. Best known for its 17th century witchcraft hysteria and trials, Salem is home to the Salem Witch Museum where guests will be entertained with stories of Pagans, Wiccans, midwives and healers. A scenic drive down Chestnut Street, often referred to as the "most beautiful street in America," also is a highlight.

Halifax
Lighthouses dot the rocky coastline of this Canadian city, the capital of Nova Scotia. Lush parks and gardens, and historic hot spots and picturesque fishing villages add to the allure of this popular port of call.

Peggy's Cove
Highlighted by colorful homes and a picture-perfect scene of a lighthouse set in granite boulders and crashing waves, this charming fishing village is one of Canada's most photographed locations. A journey to this area may also include a lobster or salmon bake.

Titanic Tales
On April 15, 1912, Halifax served as the main base for the recovery of 209 victims of the sinking of the Titanic some 750 miles east of the city. Cruise excursions visit the church and cemetery where the victims were memorialized and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, which houses a collection of Titanic artifacts.

Historic Halifax
Halifax can be explored via foot, bus and boat. Sights to see and visit include Citadel Hill, St Paul's Church, Public Gardens, Government House, Province House, the Black Cultural Center and many historic homes.'

When searching for the best deals I found a 7 day cruise with Carnival Cruises for $459 US and a 9 day cruise with Royal Caribbean for $654 US, both Inside Staterooms. The best Balcony Stateroom deal was a 7 day cruise on the brand new MSC Poesia for $899 US. (The MSC Poesia is owned by MSC Cruises which mainly offers European Cruises) Don't delay booking your Canada/New England cruise deal as space will fill!

Hyatt At Olive 8 Hotel Seattle, WA Review

Hyatt at Olive 8 Hotel Seattle, WA
2 night stay August 2009

I purchased a 2 night stay through Hyatt.com pre-paying for the room. All requests were done immediately and I got a confirmation email with my requests within minutes of booking. A few days after booking I received an email from the concierge asking if I had any additional requests. I did not, but I appreciated the thought and attention to detail.

We checked in early afternoon. There was a short wait, but all the staff were young and friendly. My intial thoughts of the lobby were WOW. It is simple, modern decor and the rooms are even better!

We booked a Deluxe King Room with city view. The room was very large. You walk into a hall with the bathroom immediately on the left. There is a wardrobe on the right as you walk into the room with bathrobes, iron, ironing board and safe. Take a look at the picture below.

hyatt_deluxe_king_room.jpg

Here is how Hyatt describes the room:
Featuring state-of-the-art sophistication blended with sustainable resources, we welcome you to the first LEED Certified hotel in Seattle. The contemporary décor offers a soothing color palette and energy efficient fixtures. All guest rooms are equipped with Watt Stopper master power controls for lighting to conserve electricity. Additionally, the hotel's green housekeeping programs utilize cleaning materials and chemicals that are environmentally friendly.

Deluxe King rooms feature one Hyatt Grand Bed, fitted with plush pillows, soft sheeting and down blankets piled atop irresistible pillow-topped mattresses. The bathroom features a glass walk-in shower, with Bricor® water-reducing showerheads that conserve water without compromising water pressure, Toto dual flush toilet and Portico bath products.

Enjoy a 37-inch flat-panel TV, iHome clock radio with iPod® docking station, wired and wireless Internet access (for a fee) and expanded workstations with oversized desks. Read a complimentary daily newspaper as you enjoy something coffee or tea. Take advantage of every luxurious service and amenity offered in our new downtown Seattle hotel.

Amenities: Hyatt Grand Bed, 37" Flat panel television, iHome clock radio with iPod docking station, Glass walk-in shower, Generous work desk, Hairdryer, Iron and ironing board, Energy efficient fixtures, Wireless high-speed Internet access for a fee, Complimentary daily newspaper, Portico bath products, In-room coffee and tea maker, Refrigerator, Lounge chair.

I was most impressed with the bathroom. It was very large and offered two sinks and a large glass shower. The complimentary bathroom amenities were very nice too.

The location of the Hyatt at Olive 8 is ideal. It's located just steps from Pike Street on 8th Avenue. Pike Street is where you'll find shopping and restaurants all within 2 blocks. One block away is also the Paramount Theater.

urbane_coffee_bar.jpg

The only disappointment I had with the hotel was the coffee bar in the lobby. It is called Urbane Coffee & Wine Bar. My husband and I went here to have a light breakfast the first morning and did not return. The staff was uninterested in helping us, the coffee was WAY to strong and as we were sitting trying to enjoy breakfast all I could hear was the staff chatting about their lives. Seattle is know for it's coffee so walk a block to Starbucks or Seattle's Best Coffee to have a better experience!

I have visited Seattle many times and will return in the future. I highly recommend this hotel and I plan on staying here again soon!

Norwegian Epic Features Many Hi-Tech Advancements

norwegian_cruise_line.jpg

Interactive television features in-room gaming, entertainment and shore excursion booking and on demand movies New facial recognition system allows guests to identify all photos taken on board

Miami - Jun 18, 2010 - High tech advancements abound on Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Cruise Line's largest and most innovative Freestyle Cruising ship to date. The features include in-room interactive television capabilities, which will allow guests to book entertainment shows and shore excursions; select on demand movies; and even play slots and video poker through a DigiCasino" capability; to a cutting edge facial recognition system that links all guests' onboard photographs.

norwegian_epic_room.jpg

Digi HD" Interactive Television
Norwegian Epic's Digi HD" Interactive Television, or ITV, was created by Allin Interactive. Using the in-room television, guests scroll through a wheel of options to make reservations for entertainment performances, book shore excursions, check their shipboard account, and select from a large library of first-run on-demand movies. A highlight of Norwegian Epic's ITV is the DigiCasino", which extends the casino into guest staterooms, allowing them to play popular games such as slots and video poker. An interactive cashier enables guests to purchase and redeem gaming credits that can be used for interactive play. All purchases made through ITV are applied to the guest's shipboard account.

Youfinder Facial Recognition System
Another hi-tech innovation on board Norwegian Epic is the Youfinder facial recognition software, created by Image. When guests board Norwegian Epic, their picture is taken and linked to their cruise card. This provides Image's proprietary indexing system, YouFinder, with the ability to match guests' faces and identification details anytime a photo is taken afterwards. Using both facial recognition and patented indexing techniques, Youfinder provides the most accurate linking of guests to their photos. When guests want to view and purchase their photos, they go to an on-board kiosk, swipe their cruise card and they can immediately view their cruise memories. From this, they can order select images and have them printed out by the ship's photo team or they can order a CD with all images and take it home.

For more information about Norwegian Epic, call a Freestyle Specialist at Cruising2Europe.com #1-800-738-8837.

Celebrity Cruises and Florida International University Annoucement

celebrity_cruises.jpg

Celebrity Cruises and Florida International University put the 'SHIP' IN Internship with groundbreaking program focusing on design. Students from master's degree program to design venue on fifth Solstice-class ship

Miami - (June 17, 2010 ) - Celebrity Cruises, the cruise brand known for designing award-winning, stylish ships with stunning onboard spaces that cater to the tastes of discerning cruisers, is tapping into a new resource: the fresh, eager minds of Florida International University (FIU) design students. Last week marked the start of a groundbreaking internship program focused on giving students the opportunity to participate in Celebrity's ability to create aesthetic beauty in its onboard interior design. Four graduate-level interior design students have the opportunity to make their mark - literally - on Celebrity's widely anticipated fifth Solstice-class ship, which will set sail in 2012.

celebrity_life.jpg

The students are tasked with working together to update the design of one of the venues on the fifth Solstice-class ship, which will debut in 2012. Their team-based assignment will mirror that of any professional cruise-ship design process, and will include brand immersion, concept development, analysis of the space as a stand-alone venue and as part of the larger ship design. By the end of the program, the students will deliver a full design package for the venue, including all required documentation to secure the successful development, engineering and execution of the design concept. This documentation ranges from the initial inspirations in sketch format to the fully realized accurate computer-generated designs. The project envelope will include not only components related to spatial requirements such as representations of floor layout, walls, ceilings, furniture, finishes and equipment, but also include those components which enhance the unique ambience of every venue, such as signage design, artwork concept, decorative lighting, among others. Celebrity's own Newbuilding Architectural Design team will then partner with the shipbuilder, Meyer Werft, to bring the students' plans to life. Construction on the ship is slated to begin in early 2011 at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

When Celebrity Cruises launched Celebrity Solstice in 2008, it introduced a new era in cruise ship design. Along with Celebrity's signature extraordinary service and award-winning cuisine, Celebrity Solstice and her four Solstice-class sister ships - two of which are already at sea, with the other two launching in 2011 and 2012 - feature hip, stylish public rooms; larger staterooms inspired by a panel of five women representing a diverse cross-section of discerning travelers; the first solar panels at sea; and the first dedicated glassblowing studio at sea, presented in partnership with the world-renowned Corning Museum of Glass.

celebrity_cruises_travel.jpg

The ships also offer discerning cruisers the opportunity to enjoy "The Lawn Club," the first lawn of real, growing grass, where guests can practice their golf putting, play croquet and bocce, or simply feel cool grass beneath their feet while miles out at sea; the first Celebrity iLounge, equipped with MacBook Pros; AquaClass, a category of staterooms inspired by the spa lifestyle; five specialty restaurants; and Team Earth.

"Every element of the Solstice-class ships, from the way we laid the staterooms out on each deck to interlock rather than reside side-by-side, to the height and texture of the chairs in the Murano specialty restaurant, is carefully designed to offer our guests an inimitable cruise vacation experience as well as to serve as a functional element of a working, premium hotel," said Harri Kulovaara, Executive Vice President, Newbuilding and Fleet Design for Celebrity's parent company, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. "When we first designed these industry-changing ships, we engaged a panel of women to help us maximize stateroom innovations. Now, we are tapping into the freshest, brightest minds around - those of students at the FIU Master of Interior Design Program - to take one of the venues on our fifth Solstice Class ship to the next level. We welcome their ideas and our team is poised to guide them through this career-enhancing experience."

celebrity_cruises_travel.jpg
"We are thrilled that Celebrity Cruises offered our students the first opportunity of this kind," said Janine King, IIDA IDEC, Chair of Florida International University's Department of Interior Design. "Not only will these future designers have hands-on experience, but they will also end up with real plans and real photos of an actual cruise ship venue, when all is said and done, and that's priceless."

The four students are participants in Florida International University's School of Architecture Master of Interior Design program, which soon will offer a 15-credit certificate in cruise ship interior design - the only one of its kind in the nation - in its line-up. The school currently offers a six-credit cruise ship design studio taught by Greg Walton of RTKL, one of the design firms that helped to create the Solstice-class ships.

The students participating in the project are all second-year graduate students in the interior design master's degree program. Their international backgrounds illuminate Florida International University's diverse student makeup. All reside in Miami, but Andrea Leano and Jenny Valencia hail originally from Bogota, Colombia. Sabrina Ocner is originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Ismabys Senra is from Havana, Cuba.

"We are proud to not only represent FIU and help generate awareness of its great interior design program, but we also are honored to be chosen to share the fresh perspective that so many young people have, and to represent our individual countries," said Valencia.

"It's really remarkable, being exposed to this opportunity," said Leano. "We are actually creating something that will be valued by Celebrity's guests, and that's something great."

Princess Cruises Addresses Israel

princess_cruises.jpg

A Letter to Those Concerned About Our Cruises to Israel

A false rumor has been spreading that Princess Cruises is boycotting Israel. This totally fictitious claim appeared to stem from a cancelled cruise call to Ashdod, Israel by our ship Pacific Princess on June 2.

We need to set the record straight. Our company is not boycotting Israel, nor was our recent cancellation of a visit to Ashdod politically motivated.

Here are the facts:
Pacific Princess was scheduled to call at Haifa and Ashdod during its last cruise, as part of its 12-day Holy Land itinerary.

At the time we were closely monitoring the events of May 31, where an incident occurred between the Israeli Defense Forces and a Gaza-bound flotilla that resulted in a number of deaths.

Pacific Princess did call at Haifa on June 1 for a full day of touring Galilee and Nazareth for our passengers.

Based on careful review of the situation and information provided by the US State Department and other sources, we were concerned about potential violence in Ashdod in reaction to the incident.

princess_cruises.jpg

We made the decision strictly in the best interest of the safety of our passengers and crew, to cancel the call in Ashdod the following day.

A competing cruise line also cancelled its call to Ashdod the same week.

It is important to understand that Princess has been bringing passengers to the Holy Land for over two decades, and this region is one of our notable destinations for passengers who want to experience historic destinations around the world. This year alone we have 12 Holy Land voyages on our cruise schedule operating between May and November, and Princess has more calls to Israel than any other major North American cruise line.

Pacific Princess is once again scheduled to call in Israel at the end of June, and we fully expect to maintain the published visits to both Haifa and Ashdod during this and subsequent cruises.

The following sources also confirm that this rumor is false, and we encourage you to look at them: Boycott Watch, Anti Defamation League, Jewish Journal, and Haaretz Daily Newspaper.

We hope that this sets the record straight, and that you will share this information with others who may have questions.

Sincerely,

Alan Buckelew
President & CEO
Princess Cruises

Questions and Answers:

What was the process by which Princess Cruises made the decision to cancel the call at Ashdod?

Our internal Security Department continuously monitors the ports of call our ships visit around the world to ensure the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew. On May 31 when the incident surrounding the flotilla occurred, our security team evaluated the information that was available from many sources, and became concerned about potential shoreside violence in reaction to the incident. Upon subsequently making the decision to cancel the call at Ashdod, we immediately informed the passengers onboard Pacific Princess with an announcement by the Captain and a letter, both of which explained our decision.

We are always disappointed when we have to alter an itinerary due to unforeseen circumstances, and such decisions are made only when deemed necessary.

Why didn't Princess just remain in Haifa for an additional day rather than sailing to the next scheduled port of call, which was Port Said, Egypt?

Our itineraries are designed with specific sailing times in between ports, and in order to make the next port as scheduled, we were not able to spend additional time in Haifa.

Why did you deem it safe for passengers to visit Haifa but not Ashdod?

The flotilla of ships was redirected to the port of Ashdod, whereas Haifa was not in the vicinity of the incident.

Why did the ship go to Egypt instead of Ashdod?

The next port of call on the cruise after Ashdod was Port Said, Egypt. We were simply maintaining the ship's published itinerary.

What was the itinerary of the ship?

Pacific Princess sailed on a 12-day cruise between Rome and Athens that included calls at Haifa and Ashdod, Israel; Port Said and Alexandria, Egypt; Sorrento, Italy; Patmos and Santorini, Greece; and Kusadasi, Turkey.

Does Princess Cruises support Israel?

Princess Cruises doesn't take political positions, and where we deploy our ships is not motivated by political considerations. Instead, Princess is devoted to bringing our passengers to the most intriguing destinations around the globe, and doing this in a safe manner. That being said, for more than two decades we have been bringing passengers to visit Israel -- which we believe is a dream destination for many -- and we have a close tourism relationship with Israel.

Are you planning on cancelling any other calls to Israel in the future?

No. However as with all of our ports of call, we continuously monitor information that may affect our ships' routings, especially those situations that could potentially impact the safety of our passengers and crew. Should it be necessary to make any adjustments, affected passengers would be advised as soon as possible.

Largest Chandelier At Sea Installed On Norwegian Epic

norwegian_cruise_line.jpg

Miami - Jun 4, 2010 - In another "first" for Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Epic, the largest LED chandelier at sea is now installed in the ship's Epic Casino, which is also the largest at sea. The chandelier, which will change colors to all in the spectrum - up to 255 possible variations - has a height of 21 feet, diameter of nearly 11 feet and weighs two metric tons. Built in Vienna, Austria by Kalmar, a leading glass crystal maker who has designed some of the largest chandeliers for hotels and palaces around the world, and designed by UK-based SMC Architects and Lighting Design, it is fitted with approximately 40,000 crystal glass pieces of various shapes and sizes - and spans vertically to three decks, with vantage points from the casino, Teppanyanki restaurant, Wasabi Sushi Bar, Malting's Whiskey Bar, Shaker's Martini Bar, and the Atrium. The design is of spiraling oval discs, each up to 30 feet in circumference, and 112 suspended crystal encrusted balls of up to one foot in diameter, which orbit the main structure at varying heights.

norwegian_epic.jpg
The chandelier is the most energy efficient at sea. It is completely illuminated by LED technology, using over 10,000 diodes. It is fully dimmable to most effectively enhance the lead crystals and is currently being programmed by UK-based Project International. The impressive structure, which will be the focal point of the ship's Atrium, took a team of people three weeks to install it.
