20 October 2010 - The Theatre Boxes in Queen Elizabeth's Royal Court Theatre were packed for the dazzling new production show, "A Slice of Saturday Night," on a recent evening during the ship's current Maiden Voyage. And as Entertainment Director Alastair Greener recounts in the latest edition of his blog, WeAreCunard.com, guests seated in box number six were about to enjoy an especially memorable night.
A few months ago, Greener was contacted by Susan Mirabito, travel operations manager for Travel Network in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, to enlist the ship's assistance with a special request. Jim McCracken, mayor of neighboring Freedom Township, wanted to propose to his girlfriend, Lisa Lehman from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, during the voyage.
The ship happily complied and reserved a table in The Verandah, to be followed with a reserved Theatre Box later that evening. Jim shared that he had met Lisa at a business conference and that they were partnered in a group leadership class. As part of an exercise, they were directed to look into each other's eyes for fifteen seconds. Jim said it was definitely love at first sight, and so he wished to recreate the moment as part of his proposal.
As the performance in the theatre came to an end, Jim asked Lisa to look into his eyes for fifteen seconds - at which point he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. Of course, she said yes.
"I cannot say enough about the Cunard staff and how responsive they were to my requests for Jim. Great lengths were taken to insure that Lisa was truly surprised," said Mirabito. "The evening was beyond the expectations of Jim and me, and I am most appreciative of the attention Cunard provided to facilitate this memorable occasion. This is a story that I am certain will be passed down from generation to generation," she added.
Jim and Lisa have their first job as an engaged couple this Friday, as they have been asked to witness the Renewal of Vows Ceremony of another couple at their dinner table!
Cunard wishes the couple every happiness, and is proud that the Line's Queen Elizabeth could be a part of this wonderful new beginning in their life together.
